Dear drummer, my name is Eugenio Ventimiglia, I'm a drummer like you and I would like to bring to your attention some aspects of playing the drums that you may have never considered. About one year ago I released this drum book, entitled Confident Drummer, which separates itself from all drum methods for a pretty interesting reason: there's not even one drum exercise in it!
I've always had a passionate love for drumming and also for psychology and the study of human behaviour, and for many years I've thought about writing a provocative book to challenge and stimulate my peers. While at the same time providing a resource full of knowledge and solutions that I've seen working so well over the years.

So, why psychology? My point of view is that psychology, and the understanding of the mental aspects of playing, are the future even for us drummers and musicians in general. In many arts, in sport and in many more fields they've figured this out a long time ago.
The goal is to optimize our performance, so that we can function well and we play our best as many times as possible.

All of this in a very specific and organized program, for quick results and rapid change. So that then we can focus on playing.

Working on the aspects that we are going to discuss is going to allow us to fight enemies like stage anxiety, lack of confidence, difficulty to focus, confusion about our choices related to drumming and what we want to do with our music.
So that we can take care of elements strictly related to performing, but also of factors like creativity, our artistic expression and our personality as drummers.

Because in order to sound good we need to be 100% into the music, but, if we are thinking about the mistake we made before, or we are nervous, or we can't stay focused, how can we possibly sound as good as we know we can?
We don't have to learn anything difficult, but, I believe, an understanding of at least the basics of the way our head works, can do nothing but good to our playing. Then, if you get interested in these fascinating subjects, you may go far with such studies. In the book I say this joke, most people spend more time learning how to use their cell phones than their brains...and unfortunately it's true.

The first thing we need to be aware of, is that psychology is 'invisible' but very real. And the typical skepticism and little interest about the subject comes exactly from this invisibility. Where is it? You can't touch it or smell it... But it is definitely something that permeates all aspects of our playing (and life...), whether we are aware of it or not.
In other words, whether we know it or not, even in playing the drums there are subtle, yet crucial, psychological factors taking place all the time. They happen automatically, and, being 'invisible', they often are beyond our consciousness...

Have you ever experienced playing perfect at rehearsal and then, when it's time to play the gig, somehow feeling uncomfortable and unfocused? Or, going in a recording studio and all of a sudden being uncertain of your skills? Let me point this out, of course we are talking about the times when we are in trouble even though we have done our homework and everything we could to be prepared.
Thus, if we aren't among those fortunate few who have naturally developed a very effective psychology, today we have the possibility to go in and make some changes in order to function better.

Our psychology is made of many levels that intertwine and interact with each other: the way we think, the way we talk to us, how we see ourselves, the things we believe, what we are used to do in a certain way. And everyone of us has developed, overtime, for each of these levels, a series of automatic behaviours which make us think, talk to ourselves, see ourselves etc. in such specific ways most of the time. Ways not always accurately related to the facts. Ways that not always serve us the best.

The Confident Drummer method is based on exercises, observations and insights designed to quickly remove from each of these levels the problems, blocks and situations that limit your performance and playing.

Read below the comments of some drummers who have already used the information in the book!

Fell free to drop me a line for any questions, Eugenio Ventimiglia

  • Great job man, the least I can do is to recommend your book to all the drummers and musicians I know, so that they can too grow musically and professionally. Thanks Eugenio.
    - David, Las Vegas

  • I'm glad I bought it, finally a book that talks about some very important topics in my opinion. I always keep it handy, also I've found the bonuses sooo interesting. Even read some of it to my more advanced students!
    - Benjamin, Australia

  • What a great idea, exactly what we were waiting for.
    - Steve, New York

  • I just thumbed through the material and it looks interesting and well organized. It deals with very important aspects of playing, often overlooked, while we got a million books on technique that go no further than that.
    - Mike, London

  • Personally I think what separates you from all other music teachers is the plain admission that learning how to play a musical instrument is first and foremost a mind matter.
    - Sagy, Israel

  • THANKS EUGENIO for a great book that is doing so much for my drumming!
    - Roberto, Rome
