I like the idea of shortcut. Too many times I hear drummers practice the same exact roll for 20 minutes flat without trying any musical nuance, any dynamics, any structure, just a million strokes in a row and that's it. I think this is probably the exact opposite of what I mean by shortcut. It also happens to be the opposite of what we need in order to make music with our drums.
Power Studies has the ambition to provide modern instruments to master, in a handful of powerful exercises for each section, many of the skills required to be great drummers.
Thanks to the experience gathered during 20 years of live and especially studio performances, I have gradually been able to bring into focus the aspects of playing typically overlooked but critical to achieve greatness.
The accuracy, the balance, the feeling, the unwavering groove, the time feel, the sound, the control, the pulse, the space between notes...these are all elements that concern the 'how' we play and not the 'what'.
If you already have a few years of experience playing the drums you have probably noticed that what makes a musician great is never what he plays but the way he plays it. And such elusive elements are rarely discussed or analyzed so that we can understand and summarize their nature in a practical method to work on them.
We will do that together in these 140 pages, which collect the strategies I have developed over time to improve significantly in the shortest time possible.
I believe this study course will bring the student close to the ideal of a perfect drummer: technical, musical, dynamic, accurate, fast...the bad news is that to do all this will likely take years of hard work, and as we are going to see, the combinations and therefore the materials to be practiced are unlimited.
In fact, I actually don't think any real 'shortcut' exists, as I believe in order to master anything we need to put in the hours and keep a relaxed attitude. But there are definitely certain things that give us better results, take care of more important aspects of drumming, and lead to a level of control that allows higher musical expression and not just making some noise.
That's what this book is all about.
Some of these exercises might look simple, but playing them perfectly, paying attention to all the details and making sure everything is precise, with flawless timing, balance and a great sound, particularly at the slowest tempos, is often an unexpected challenge. Let's put it this way, they are easy to play badly, but playing them perfectly is a completely different story...
