Vinnie needs no presentation. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential drummers of all times, and deserves every bit of the recognition he gets.
Not only he has unbelievable chops, his groove is also as deep as it gets. Combine all of this with a career spanning five decades (!) at the highest level and you get the picture.
What’s even more incredible is that now, in his mid sixties, he is still at the top of his game. Unparalleled talent, genius, creativity, dedication, contribution, and ultimately, love for music.
This is a little tribute to the astounding grooves he has played in a variety of genres with some of the greatest artists of our time: Sting, Gino Vannelli, Toto, Robben Ford, Mike Stern, Steely Dan, Jing Chi, Randy Waldman, Frank Zappa, Karizma, Allan Holdsworth, Andy Summers, Bill Evans and more.
I went through my record collection and picked 40 of what in my opinion are some of the best beats he has played, both in studio and live recordings, to put together this PDF.
I recommend checking out the songs mentioned and listen to the way Vinnie sounds in these grooves, to understand not only what but also HOW he plays them.
I believe studying such great masters is a must for every drummer, as practicing ideas like these can be truly inspirational.
So let’s get ready to groove hard!

This is part of my ‘Groove Masters’ mini-series. A few more are on their way (and drop me a line if you have any request). For instance, I have also created three booklets about Steve Jordan, Jeff Porcaro and John JR Robinson, which you can download here:
